About Us

Concerto Brandenburg was founded 1998 in Berlin. Our repertoire includes music from the Baroque period to the Romantic, with a special emphasis on works by Baroque composers of the Berlin school, the revival of which being of great interest within the ensemble.

Creating historically accurate and musically engaging performances requires special sensitivity to the character of the compositions. In our almost 20 years of performing as an ensemble Concerto Brandenburg has come to be cherished by music lovers for presenting authentic sound experiences in addition to technical virtuosity. Musical interpretations, the choice of instruments, bows, strings, and historical scenes are just as important to the ensemble as the scholarly historical findings in original manuscripts and note printing. The beautiful tonal results are  convincing and inspiring.

Flexibility, with perfectly chosen instrumentation for the literature to be performed; this is a characteristic of Concerto Brandenburg of which we are very proud. Each concert ensemble is individuality planned based on the historical, original performances of the compositions performed. Concerto Brandenburg delivers exciting concerts in all Chamber Music, Baroque and Romantic orchestral combinations, always creating a tone which rings true to the historical sound ideals as prescribed by the composers.

Concerto Brandenburg works together with renowned artists such as Christine Schornsheim, Ludger Remy, Alexander Bader and Dörthe Maria Sandmann. Conductors recently featured Jörg-Peter Weigle, Christoph Stöcker and Christian Friedrich Dallmann. Our recording “Prussian Baroque” with works by Friedrich II., J. J. Quantz, Christoph Schaffrath, C. H. Graun and C. P. E. Bach received great acclaim.

In collaboration with the Philharmonic choir of Berlin, the Staats- und Domchor Berlin, and the Berlin Singakademie, Concerto Brandenburg has proven itself as a respected ensemble for choral-symphonic performances. The Passions and Christmas Oratorio of Johann Sebastian Bach, G. F. Händels “Messiah”, W. A. of Mozart’s “Requiem”,  Joseph Haydn’s “Creation,”, L. v. Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis” and Claudio Monteverdis “Vespers” have all been performed by Concerto Brandenburg in the Konzerthaus on the Gendarmenmarkt and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Concerto Brandenburg has been selected twice by the German Bundespräsident as a Musical Ambassador for Germany. In this capacity we performed for Johannes Rau (German Bundespräsident) and the Spanish King in Madrid. Concerto Brandenburg was a guest at the Spanish “Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Bazea”, and we also performed in the beautiful Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. In our function as German Musical Ambassador Concerto Brandenburg  performed for Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to Germany.

Concerto Brandenburg has well established itself in the rich and vibrant music culture in  Berlin and the Brandenburg region. We have successfully asserted a presence and popularity in the demanding regional concert scene and enjoy a continously growth in terms of reputation nationwide and internationally among connoisseurs of “early music”. We hope to see you in the near future, at one of our concerts!
